Did you just find out your kids a Brony (or other fandome fan)?
Did you ask, “What the potato is that?”
Did you yell “Noooooooo!” either silently or out loud?
STOP!
Hammer Time!
Really, I mean it. Stop and do the Hammer Time dance. Go ahead, it's good for you.
You need to release stress in a safe manner.
Your life and your kids life is over!
Actually, your lives may just be starting now that your kid has found something to be passionate about.
No, really! It's true!
Most likely if you fight it and try to change them you could send them off an ugly deep end. But if you support them you may have the privilege of watching them bloom into something wonderful.
It won't always be perfect or even good. Kids are people and you are a people and people make mistakes and goof up from time to time. When you support your kids you have more opportunity to show them how to turn a mishap into a lesson.
When I say support I mean loving, kindness, patience, willingness to research , a listening ear and so on.
If there are no lines of communication open how are you going to let them know something bothers you or you believe a certain thing will lead them into danger? Once your kid knows they can confide in you you can better protect them and help them. Tossing their interest out like it's smelly garbage is the short cut to losing them. And when they do make mistakes it's good to be someone they know they can come to instead of going to a shady character somewhere else.
Wither you are fandom prone yourself or not, the fandom life can still be fun. I love watching my kids creativity and how they know how to research and learn how to make this and craft that. Wither you have money or don't they can still find ways to make their costume or make something like a costume for cosplay. It doesn't cost anything for them to write fan fiction. It encourages them to write, read, research and create, etc.
Being a supporter also means you will be there for them when they run across bullies. And that's a whole 'nuther subject. We'll be sure to get into it.
